Computer for Seniors

Macintosh Basics

This is a basic course on how to use the Macintosh computer system and to understand how it works.  No previous knowledge is needed to successfully take this course.  You will learn how to organize your files and folders, browse the internet and to use email.

Creative Projects on Macintosh NEW

Explore creative projects with software that is on all Mac computers.  Develop a brochure, poster, family newsletter, presentation, and a short movie.  This course will provide an in depth understanding of software available on all Macs.  This is not a beginner course. Macintosh Basics is recommended prior to taking this course.

Digital Scrapbooking

This introductory workshop is open to participants who wish to learn how to design a creative digital scrapbook page using treasured photos.   We will focus on the basic skills necessary to take your digital photographs into creatively designed digital scrapbook pages in Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Photoshop Elements is one of the best digital imaging programs for editing your digital photography at home

Digital Scrapbooking

Level 2 NEW

Go further in depth with Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Use your photographs to design pages with tools from this program.  You will work in digital layers, with each element of your design being a new layer. Photoshop Elements has everything that you would want in an actual studio – from brushes, to painting with color, erasers, a text tool for journaling and quotations, pencils, markers, stamps –only it’s digital.  Tuesday 11/18, 4 classes.

Excel

Create and print a spreadsheet that makes sense.  Write simple formulas, and learn how to use the fx key.  Also use auto sum, find an average, and master other handy and helpful formulas.  Create formulas

using relative and absolute referencing the easy way.

Introduction to Computers

Be prepared for an office environment.  Learn the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer.  Students will work on a personal computer during class and become more proficient with these programs.  Course will proceed at a rapid pace to meet the requirements of the Clerical Certificate Curriculum.

Keyboarding

Develop basic keyboarding skills, stressing accuracy.  Students enrolled in this beginning keyboarding program will attain a speed of 30 wpm or better with complete accuracy in a three-minute timed test.  Students wishing to learn the keyboard for more effective computer use will be accepted on a space-available basis.

SAT Prep

High school students will improve their SAT test scores if they prepare.  Become familiar with SAT-type questions, develop test-taking strategies, manage test panic, increase confidence and speed, and get a review of test content.  Each student will take a full-length diagnostic exam at the beginning of the course.  Upon completion of the course, the students will have continuous access to an on-line program to continue their study of the SAT.

Searching For Ancestors NEW

Matte Cutting

Learn basic matte cutting techniques in this beginner class.  Discuss and calculate measurements and choose color scheme the first night.  Come the second night ready to cut the matte and complete your project.  Outside dimensions of matte will be precut by instructor and will be based on standard frame sizes. Please bring a photo to matte and any matte cutters you may have (not required). Class limited to 8. Discover the culinary, fragrant, decorative, and useful aspects of herbs in this fascinating class.  Learn about the history, folklore, and traditional uses of herbs.  Discussion and video presentation will include the planning, designing, and maintaining of herb gardens.  Handouts are supplied each week, including recipes from Fran’s own herb cookbook.  The last class is held at the instructor’s house where she makes some selections from handouts; everyone gets to sample these wonderful recipes.

If you are a beginning rider, are contemplating riding lessons, think there may be a horse in your future, or simply want to overcome a fear of horses, this class is for you. Newport Mansions During The Holidays

The Newport Mansions are decked out for the holidays.  Experience the elegant life of Newport society. Visit three holiday-decorated mansions including the holiday evening gala at the renowned Breakers.  We’ll be stopping for a late breakfast/brunch before touring the first mansion.  A dinner break is scheduled for the late afternoon before attending the evening gala where dessert will be served.  Your registration fee includes all mansion visits and transportation but not meals.  You may choose to pack a meal or two rather than dining out.  The bus will leave from the Wells Transportation Center.  Muffins and juice will be served after departure, and we will enjoy a film en-route.

GED

Adult Education of the Kennebunks offers adults GED testing FREE of charge.  Our Educational Counselor works with each student to develop an individual educational plan.

The GED test includes: Language Arts, Reading and Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  Adults who are 18, and not enrolled in school, are eligible to take this series of tests. We welcome students from Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and surrounding communities.

 

The GED tests are designed to measure the important knowledge and skills, usually learned during four years of high school that may have been gained in a different manner. 

 

Adults wishing to take the GED are required to take pre–tests.  Pre-tests are available by appointment.  Students who succeed in the pre-tests may immediately schedule to take the GED.  FREE tutorial assistance is available if pre-test scores indicate student needs instruction before taking the official test.  Workbooks are $20 for each subject.

 

GED candidates are required to meet with our Educational Counselor, prior to taking the tests.  Please call 985-1116 for an appointment.  Accommodations are available for people with documented learning disabilities. 

 

LITERACY

One out of every five Maine adults cannot read this brochure. Do you know someone we can help learn to read?  Reading and basic mathematics instruction for adults who need assistance is available FREE of charge on a confidential one-to-one tutorial basis. This learning opportunity is offered during the times of day or evening that fit each student’s schedule.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES – ESOL

ESOL instruction is offered FREE of charge through Adult Education of the Kennebunks to non-English speaking students who are residents of the community and wish to improve their language skills.  Instruction is provided by adult education teachers and trained tutors from the community. Adult Education of the Kennebunks, in cooperation with the Cumberland York Certificate Consortium offers an Office Skills Certificate Program.  This program provides essential clerical skills for entry-level positions in a variety of office settings.  Required courses include the following:
