Online Research Database Subscription Services

The following sites are available on the Library computers.  If you wish to access these  subscription services from home you must first stop into the KHS Library to get your user name and password!

The award-winning CQ Researcher explores a single "hot" issue in the news in-depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports. Numerous charts, graphs and sidebar articles -- plus a pro-con feature, a chronology, lengthy bibliographies and a list of contacts -- round out each report. Every 12,000-word report is written by an experienced journalist and features comments from experts, lawmakers and citizens on all sides of every issue.              Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is an excellent educational database from Thomson Gale, a company that has provided information resources to libraries for more than 50 years.  As the title indicates, current and relevant topics are presented from opposing viewpoints, providing materials for in-depth study and intelligent, thought-provoking analysis.  Topics range from political (e.g., censorship, political corruption), scientific (e.g., marine resources conservation, renewable energy), biomedical (e.g., drugs and athletes, medical ethics), to psychology/sociology (e.g., eating disorders, media violence) and much more.  


History Resource Center: World

The History Resource Center: U.S. and History Resource Center: World contain full text reference materials, periodicals, primary sources, maps, and graphic from over 1,000 original sources, each with a Commentary that provides analysis of the historic significance of the content, many with facsimile views of the original pages. Search Tips help students search the database effectively and a well-organized Student Research Guide explains terminology and techniques for historical research and writing.


          

SIRS Knowledge Source provides integrated online access to full-text articles and internet resources from SIRS reference databases, along with a dictionary, a thesaurus, maps of the world, and citation help, all in a comfortable, easily navigated user interface. Student research topics are suggested, and rotating topic areas are highlighted.

SIRS Researcher Topics for student reference, social issues, health, science, and business, categorized into topics of Leading Issues, Today’s News, Natural Disasters, Focus on Terrorism, etc.

SIRS Government Reporter  Country profiles, historic and governmental documents, directories, and almanacs.

SIRS Renaissance  Current perspectives on the arts and humanities, a glossary of the arts, and profiles of notable artists.


 

Find Articles is a free online database of published articles from hundreds of journals throughout the world and across dozens of subject areas

Maine's Virtual Library Maine's Virtual Library is a searchable collection of magazines, newspapers, journals, dictionaries, encyclopedias, images, and other sources available 24 hours a  day.   Within the state all you need is a computer and internet access.  MARVEL! includes Academic Search Premier, Contemporary Authors and Contemporary Literary Criticism, Health Source, MasterFile Premier, Novelist, Proquest Newspapers (including coverage of Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bangor Daily News, Portland Press Herald and hundreds of national and international newspapers), in addition to other sophisticated research tools from EBSCO Online.  Just follow the link!


 

 Windows on Maine

 

Windows on Maine features material from the historical series HOME: the Story of Maine and Maine Public Broadcasting Network's signature science series, QUEST: Investigating our World.  Integrated technologies, including streaming video, audio, animation, interactive resources including Flash, searchable text, photographs, datasets, hot spots, web links and transcripts, document Maine's history and the Gulf of Maine ecology as impacted by its dominant and changing resources: the forest and the sea.  Also offers K-12 teachers online professional development programming through the Annenberg/CPB educational distribution network.  


 KHS Library subscribes to The New York Times Book Review and thus we have access to their TimesSelect,, a service from The Times providing exclusive online access to Op-Ed columnists, The Times Archives back to 1851, and features and analysis by select columnists from Business, New York/Region, Sports and the International Herald Tribune. Selected Times articles are posted on TimesSelect even before they are published in Sunday's Times. At TimesSelect,, readers can access articles enriched with the sights and sounds of video, audio, slide shows and interactive graphics.

This electronic resource includes extremely flexible search and browsing capabilities. Students can save articles and searches to personalized logon areas for later retrieval. Article citation information is included with every article.
