STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS

Purpose

 

The Board believes it is important to seek out and consider students’ ideas, viewpoints and reactions to the educational program.  In order to provide student input and involvement, the Board shall appoint two Student Board members nominated in accordance with procedures approved by the Board and with rights and duties as described in this policy.

Participation

Two Student Board members shall be seated with regular Board members and be recognized at meetings as advisory, members with advisory voting privileges.  They may fully participate in meetings by questioning presenters and discussing issues.  Student Board members will receive all materials presented to Board members except those related to closed sessions or confidential in nature.  Advisory votes cast by student representatives will be recorded in the minutes of each Board meeting.  Each student representative will also sit on one board committee or district committee of their choice (excluding Human Resources).

Term

Each year the Board shall appoint one member of the incoming junior class to the Board.  The term of a Student Board member shall be a two year term from July 1st of one year to June 30th of the second following year.  The Board shall act on the appointments for the next term at a June meeting.   Should a vacancy occur prior to the conclusion of the term another student may be appointed in accordance with established procedures to complete the term. 

Eligibility

Student Board members shall maintain curriculum and citizenship standards, which include:

 

a.         Eligibility to participate in athletics and extra curricular activities, as defined by the district’s Academic Eligibility policy (JJJ/JJIC).

b.         Standards of behavior and citizenship that are determined to be of high quality.

c.        Adhere to Board standards of membership, ethics, attendance, and decorum.

d.        A Student Board member may be removed from office by a 2/3 vote of the Board for cause.

Elective Credit

Student participation on the School Board may qualify for elective credit under the provisions of an independent student contract, subject to prior approval of the principal.

Orientation of New Student Member

The selected Student Board member shall be provided an orientation of School Board Procedures and responsibilities as determined by the Superintendent of Schools and the Board.
