LEAVE OF ABSENCE
It is the policy of M.S.A.D. No. 71 to grant unpaid leaves of absence to employees in certain unusual circumstances according to the following criteria:
1) Leaves will be generally considered for a semester or full contract year in order to limit the impact on students and allow proper planning.
2) Pre-approval of leaves must be requested 90 days ahead of beginning date unless an extenuating circumstance exists.
3) The application must be submitted in writing to the Superintendent and include a detailed reason(s) why the leave is in the best interest of the students, school and the individual applicant. In addition, the employee must identify how they will assist in planning and in the transition of program or services.
4) The Board of School Directors shall have the sole authority to grant or deny leaves of absence except that the Superintendent shall have the authority to grant up to 5 days of unpaid leave within a contract year to an employee for unusual circumstances.
5) Leave of Absence will not be granted by the Board of School Directors for:
- vacation purposes
- trips or excursions or experiences which are not primarily educational and/or professional development opportunities
