MEDICALLY FRAGILE STUDENTS

The school nurse is responsible for gathering information from the student, parent and physician(s) on students with special health needs and determining the supports needed so that the student can access educational programming.

These determinations might include:

1.         Administration of medication.

2.         Implementing a nursing procedure.

3.         Obtaining equipment.

4.         Teaching unlicensed assistive personnel how to care for the student.

Communicating the student’s special needs with teacher(s), guidance counselor, administrator(s), support staff, bus driver.

When the student has very significant health needs in the school setting, the school nurse will write an individual health plan which will be shared with parents and appropriate school personnel.  If the student is part of special education, the individual health plan will be part of his/her individual education plan.  If the student is not in special education, but needs modifications to his or her education, the school nurse will work with the individual program planning team to implement the individual health plan according to Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act.
