PROCEDURES FOR PARENTAL REVIEW OF CURRICULAR/INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS OR ACTIVITIES

Parents who wish to review instructional materials currently used by the District, or being considered for use, should direct their request in writing to the building Principal.  Parents may take one copy of printed textbooks, printed supplementary books and printed subject matter materials from the school premises for not more than forty-eight (48) hours.  If sufficient copies are not available for all who request them, the parent’ name will be put on a waiting list in the order that the requests for review are received.  Parents will be notified as the copies become available.

Parents may review all other instructional materials, including films, only on school premises.

State-required and local standardized tests, whether or not they yet have been administered, and all teacher-made tests that have not yet been administered, must remain confidential, and thus may not be reviewed.

Parents who object to learning materials or activities on the basis that the material for activity is harmful to their children may file a written objection with the building Principal.  The objection must specifically identify the material or activity to which the parent objects, the reason for the objection, and what it is that the parent desires the school to do to overcome the objection.  Objection to material or an activity on the basis that it is harmful includes objection to a material or activity because it questions beliefs or practices in sex, morality or religion.

Upon receipt of a written objection, the building Principal will inform the child’s teacher of the parent’s objection.

Within three (3) school days after the written objection is received, the Principal or his or her designee and teacher will schedule a conference with the parent in an attempt to resolve the parent’s objection.  The conference will be held at a time reasonably convenient for all parties and will not interfere with the regular education process.

The Principal will forward a copy of the parent’s written objection, and a memorandum of the conference with the parent and teacher, including a summary of the discussion and the resolution of the objection, if any, to the Superintendent within the five (5) school days after the conference.

If the result of the conference is not satisfactory to the parent, the parent may request in writing that the child be withdrawn from the class or program to which the parent objects.  The request will be directed to the Superintendent and include a complete explanation of the reasons for the request.  The Superintendent, or his or her designees, may, in his or her discretion schedule a meeting to discuss the class or activity to which the parent objects.  The Superintendent or his or her designees will act upon the request within five (5) school days after it is received.  The parent will be notified of the action taken by the Superintendent.
