ACCESS TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS
In keeping with its commitment to provide our students with access to universal information, M.S.A.D. No. 71 will provide its staff and students access to telecommunication services such as Internet and other online databases as available and appropriate. The Internet and other online services provide an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers and millions of individual subscribers.
With access to computers and people all over the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. On a global network it is impossible to control all materials and an industrious user may discover controversial information. M.S.A.D. No. 71 firmly believes that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweigh the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of this district.
The administration is directed to develop administrative rules that educate staff, students and parents to the uses as well as the possibility of abuses of the networks and to provide education to staff and students for correct and proper use. No student will be given access until he or she has completed an introductory course of study on acceptable use, privileges and etiquette. Parents and/or guardians will need to give written permission for a student to be granted Internet privileges.
The Superintendent or his/her designee shall be responsible for developing and implementing procedures and rules for home use of the MLTI (Maine Learning Technology Initiative) laptops. Students may take their MLTI laptop home provided the conditions outlined in the MLTI Laptop Home Use Procedures and the student adheres to all of the school unit’s acceptable use rules for computer and internet use.
