PROCEDURE FOR VIOLATION OF STUDENT
POLICY ON CHEMICAL ABUSE
I. K-5 Procedures
A. Disciplinary Action
1. Type One: Possession or Use
a. First offense
(1) confiscate and verify
(2) administrator meets with student
(3) notify superintendent and police
(4) administrator notifies and meets with
parent/guardian
(5) disciplinary action (1-5 days) in school suspension
(6) student meets with the Guidance Counselor who will consult with the Chemical Abuse Counselor
(7) refer student to Pupil Evaluation Team (P.E.T.), educational or other appropriate services as necessary
(8) refer parent to appropriate services
(9) Principals designee will make available two sessions of age appropriate chemical abuse prevention education
b. Second offense
(1) same as first offense (7 steps)
(2) in-school suspension (5-10 days) (3) recommend that student attend a smoking cessation program if appropriate
c. Suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while in school, on school grounds and/or at school functions:
(1) staff concern
(2) students referred to nurse for medical and/or substance abuse assessment
(3) notify principal
(4) principal must notify parent/guardian
(5) meeting with parent/guardian, administrator, nurse and student
(6) send student home for the day or follow procedures for Type I possession/use
(7) refer student to SAT team or Chemical Abuse Counselor
2. Type Two: Furnishing and/or Selling
a. confiscate and verify
b. administrator meets with student
c. recommendation of expulsion to the board
d. notify parents/guardians and superintendent
e. notify police
f. meet with Chemical Abuse Counselor/Guidance Counselor
g. refer to appropriate services
B. Voluntary Referral
1. Type One: Concerned Person
a. notify administrator of incident or concern
b. administrator may meet with student and will contact the parent
c. notify parent or guardian
d. encourage student to meet with Chemical Abuse Counselor/ Guidance Counselor
e. follow recommendations of Chemical Abuse Coordinator
f. refer to other services if appropriate
2. Type Two: Self Referral
a. listen to concern
b. refer to Chemical Abuse Counselor/Guidance Counselor
c. administrator may meet with student and will contact parent
d. the individual follows recommendations of the Chemical Abuse Counselor
C. School Functions
a. remove from function if on a school sponsored activity and/or return to school grounds and retain while following steps 2-5
b. call parent/guardian to assume physical responsibility
c. call law enforcement agency to transport home if parent cannot be reached or cannot transport home
d. if a student must be transported home, have another adult accompany you. Under no circumstances is a student to be left unsupervised. If a parent/guardian is not available, student may be left with another responsible adult, providing that adult agrees to assume that responsibility.
e. notify school administrator of incident and follow disciplinary action as outlined in Part IA.
II. Middle School Procedures
A. Disciplinary Action
1. Type One: Possession/Use or suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
a. first offense
(1) confiscate and verify (assessment by school nurses)
(2) administrator meets with student
(3) notification of parents/guardians
(4) notify superintendent and police
(5) restricted school day and/or suspension (5 days)
(6) principal’s designee will make available two sessions of age appropriate chemical abuse prevention education
(7) follow recommendation of Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT, refer to P.E.T., educational or other appropriate service as necessary
b. second offense
(1) confiscate and verify (assessment by school nurse)
(2) administrator meets with student
(3) notification of and meeting with parents/guardians
(4) notify superintendent and police
(5) suspend student for 5-10 days (with possible recommendations for expulsion)
(6) parents meet with administrator and Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
(7) follow recommendation of Chemical Abuse Counselor
(8) students will attend a smoking cessation program if appropriate
c. third and subsequent offense
(1) same as above with more serious disciplinary action
(2) recommend formal valuation for treatment
2. Type Two: Furnishing/Selling
a. first offense
(1) confiscate and verify substance (assessment by school nurse)
(2) meet with student
(3) notify parent/guardian
(4) notify superintendent and police
(5) meeting with Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
(1) follow all the above steps for first offense
(2) recommendation of expulsion to the board
B. Voluntary Referral
1. Type One: Concerned Person (parent, teacher, student, etc.)
a. notify administration of incident or concern
b. administrator may meet with student
c. notify parent/guardian
d. encourage student to meet with Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
e. follow recommendations of Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
(1) internal referral-counselor, support group, affected group etc.
(2) A.A., Alateen, Youth & Family Services, individual/family private counselors
2. Type Two: Self-Referral
a. listen to concerns
b. encourage student to meet with Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
c. administrator may meet with student
d. notify parent/guardian
e. follow recommendations of Chemical Abuse Counselor/SAT
