IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
The School Nurse is responsible for determining the immunization status of every student and assuring he/she is in compliance with the:
Maine School Immunization Law (Department of Education Chapter 126, “Immunization Requirements for School Children.”). This law requires a child to have the proper immunizations completed within 90 days of entering school.
Non-immunized students shall not be permitted to attend school unless the parents/guardians grant written consent for their child to be immunized by a public health officer, physician, or other authorized person and verification that immunizations will be given at the earliest possible date.
A parent who wants his/her child exempted from the requirements, must sign and submit exemption statements annually to the nurse and Superintendent.
If a parent does not comply with the current School Immunization Law in ninety (90) days of the student’s enrollment, the school nurse reports this to the Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent then must enforce the law, which states, “No Superintendent may permit any child to be enrolled in or attend a school without a certificate of immunization for each disease or other acceptable evidence of required immunization or immunity against each disease.”
The Superintendent shall exclude from school any non-immunized students who are exempt from immunization when there is a clear danger to the health of others as provided by law.
The Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee is directed to develop such administrative procedures as necessary to carry out this policy and comply with statutory requirements.
