Special Education
Services

MSAD #71 offers a full continuum of special education and supportive services to meet the needs of our students with disabilities in accordance with both federal and state regulations.

Resource Room K-12

Resource Room Programs provide services to students who have mild to moderate disabilities.  Generally, students attend all regular education classes and receive academic support and remediation.  Students receive remediation of basic academic and study skills, and receive tutorial support for regular class subjects.

Life Skills K-12

Life Skills Programs are designed for students with moderate to severe disabilities who require intensive direct instruction to learn functional academic, social and vocational skills in order to live and learn independently in their homes, school and community.  Community based learning and vocational training are provided.  Students participate in a variety of vocational training experiences ranging from classroom jobs to job shadowing to community-based jobs with job coaching support provided as needed.  Students also attend regular education classes in accordance with their Individualized Education Plans.

Emotional Disabilities Self-contained K-12

Emotional Disabilities Self-contained Programs are designed for students who present with externalized or internalized behaviors that prevent them from succeeding in the regular classroom despite having the cognitive and academic skills required to master the curriculum.  Students work on developing social skills and appropriate behavior to become successful citizens and learners.  Students attend the program for academic and behavioral support and to earn academic credits in some instances.  Students attend regular education classes in accordance with their Individualized Education Plan.

Speech & Language Services

Speech & Language therapy is a service designed for remediation of communication disorders such as impaired articulation, stuttering, voice impairment and language impairments that adversely affect the student’s educational performance.  Speech and language therapy is provided as a direct service or on a consultative basis.  In many cases, students receive speech therapy as a related service to their other special education program.
